Meet Compliance Standards: Schools and Childcare Centers

Apply for Filter First Funding by Oct 25, 2024

By January 24, 2025, all schools and childcare centers in Michigan will be required to adhere to the new Filter First legislation, which mandates the implementation of a Drinking Water Management Plan (DWMP).

Requirements Overview

  1. Develop a Drinking Water Management Plan (DWMP)
  2. Install Lead-Reducing Filters on all consumptive fixtures.
  3. Test Filtered Water regularly.
  4. Schedule Routine Water Sampling and testing for lead at each filtered fixture.
  5. Select a Certified Drinking Water Laboratory to analyze samples.
  6. Record Test Results in a table or similar format.

Timeline

  • By January 24, 2025: Schools and childcare centers must complete a Drinking Water Management Plan.
  • By October 24, 2025: Childcare centers must ensure that any water provided to children is from a filtered source.
  • By the End of the 2025-2026 School Year: Schools must have approved filters on all consumptive fixtures.
  • Ongoing Compliance: Schools will conduct annual sampling, while childcare centers will sample every two years, ensuring ongoing certification of compliance once filters are installed.
